Diwaliportraits

A few ideas for what we can create together this season.

Shoot ideas

Eight Diwali shoots

Each comes with a few example shots. Most sessions mix two or three.

Lighting the diyas

Warm, close, and the most Diwali shot there is.

  • Hands cupping a lit diya, tight on the flame and your bangles
  • Three-quarter portrait, eyes down into the flame
  • Seated on the floor with a tray of diyas around you

PropsDiyas, a brass thali, a lighter

Sparkler night

A phuljhadi and a slow shutter turn sparks into lines of light.

  • Sparkler held high, caught mid-laugh
  • A swirl of light drawn around you while you hold still
  • Two of you crossing sparklers

PropsSparklers, and a friend if you like

City lights at dusk

Like the shot above: blue hour, a lit skyline, windows melting into gold.

  • Walking toward the camera, dupatta trailing
  • Looking back over your shoulder at the lights
  • Leaning on a railing as the sky goes dark

PropsJust your outfit and a good street

Fairy-light glow

Warm string lights behind you become soft gold circles.

  • Dupatta lifted over your head, lights glowing through the net
  • Seated on floor cushions, lights hung behind you
  • A strand of lights held close to your face

PropsWarm-white string lights

Marigolds & petals

Genda phool in the foreground adds a blur of orange and a festive frame.

  • Framed through a hanging garland
  • A garland draped across your shoulders
  • Tossing petals, caught mid-air

PropsMarigold garlands, loose petals

Rangoli

Color on the ground, shot from above.

  • Drawing the rangoli, seen from overhead
  • Seated beside the finished design, diyas all around
  • Close-up of hands dusted with color

PropsRangoli colors, chalk, diyas

Welcome at the door

A doorway, a toran overhead, and diyas along the threshold.

  • Standing framed in the doorway
  • Placing the last diya on the step
  • Peeking out from behind the door

PropsA toran, diyas, a doorway with character

Getting ready

Shringar: the quiet moments before everyone arrives.

  • Putting on jhumkas in a mirror
  • Mehndi hands stacking bangles
  • Close-up as the bindi goes on

PropsA mirror, your jewelry, bangles

What to wear

Bring your festive best

Wear what you love. Rich color and embroidery come alive in warm light.

Real flame on set. Diyas and sparklers are live fire. Pin loose dupattas, keep synthetic fabric clear of the flame, and I'll have water on hand.
